The footage I shot as DP has returned. If we play by the rules, we are supposed to wait until this Wednesday for dailies when the entire crew gathers and we watch the footage, synced with the sound in script order.
I was going to go along with this until I had to digitize audition footage on the computer that has the dailies, and the temptation became too much. I sneaked a peak, and I’m pretty happy with the way the footage turned out.
During production, time seems to fly by more quickly as DP than any other job. You really do set the pace of the shoot. With the 1st AD telling you you have to go, you just need to go with your gut, pick an f-stop, and get shooting.
Since we were shooting with the new VISION3 500T, it’d be pretty impossible to not expose anything. I’m actually very happy we picked that stock, because even though we were shooting outside most of the time, the weather wasn’t very cooperative the first day and that extra ISO allowed us to shoot through those cloudy skies.
There were a few dolly shots that were kind of bumpy because of the way the camera was set up, and our less than optimal gear (Arri SRII vs. SR3). But overall I’m quite pleased and am looking forward to the “official” first look at dailies. I’ll try to sneak some stills out for a future post.
